Our Celebrity Golf Classic began in 1995, raising close to $18,000. It is now one of the most successful charitable golf tournaments in the state, raising more than $9 million to date. With growing support and contributions from so many, the Randy Shaver Cancer Research & Community Fund was formed in 2003 to ensure all of the money raised through the golf event and other endeavors would be used to fund research and cancer-related projects locally in addition to a variety of other worthy causes each year. To date, the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund has raised over $13 million for Minnesota’s Cancer Community!
What makes this Fund so unique is that less than 10% of the monies raised are spent on administrative costs, making it one of the most efficient uses of your charitable donation. Grants given are spent on technology and tools that enhance early detection of cancer, new programs promoting research to help prevent cancer relapses, projects that demonstrate research in the area of cancer, and programs that enhance the lives of Minnesota’s cancer community by providing aid and assistance.
Randy Shaver has been at KARE-11 Television (NBC Affiliate) in Minneapolis/St. Paul since 1983. While his focus has always been on cancer research and the Minnesota cancer community, Randy’s fight became intensely personal when he himself became a patient shortly after his 1998 tournament. Diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Disease, Randy’s treatment and subsequent remission have understandably made him even more passionate than ever about finding a cure.
